web 2.0

this whole web 2.0 movement has been driving me crazy lately. . .seems like we haven't even really figured out web 1.0 yet and we are already moving on to the next thing. does 3 years of quasi-stability in an industry mean we have weathered the storm, can pat ourselves on the back, and look toward the glorious future where the money just starts rolling in? i look at business's like google and aol whose revenue steam is still singularly focused. they may have done work in the past few years to add other streams, but none are strong enough to carry a company through a downturn in the market, let alone 3 or 4 bad quarters.

i think everyone is really happy with themselves for figuring out a way to make money on the web - believe me, i am happy too, since i work in the industry - but i don't think it is time to rest on our laurels, look at what we have done, and tell our selves we've made it over the hump, we are smarter than the web 1.0 people, and it's time to crown ourselves the new leaders of the web 2.0 revolution - can anyone actually tell what web 2.0 is, besides a very expensive conference in san francisco a few months ago? people throw the term around like it means something, 'we are living in web 2.0 world.' i'm not sure i know what the web 2.0 world is, but it sounds a bit dodgey, and i am pretty sure it's the like world i live in now where a one bedroom apartment goes for $700k. . .sounds like eden to me. . .

the register recently asked the same question that i am tangling with about web 2.0, and they do it much more justice than i do - read a bit when you get a chance. . .i think my favorite description was: "Web 2.0 is the air for the next bubble" - i have a feeling this balloon may be a bit bigger though. . ..

blow up o'reilly and blow hawkings. . .

so thanks to intense coverage by the sf chronicle, everyone in the bay area knows about fox's bill oreilly's statements about blowing up san francisco - if not, here is a taste:

"You know, if I'm the president of the United States, I walk right into Union Square, I set up my little presidential podium and I say, 'Listen, citizens of San Francisco, if you vote against military recruiting, you're not going to get another nickel in federal funds."

and then,

"Fine. You want to be your own country? Go right ahead, and if al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead." (see full chronicle article here)

well, no need to point out the fact that his is an idiot, but i will anyway, he is an idiot. besides the obvious stupidy of his comment, one person pointed out the the two things he holds near and dear to his heart are herosim and courage. . . the two things coit tower was built to honor - the heroism and courage of sf firefighters. i wont talk about it anymore because i just dont want to lend any credence to his statements, no matter how stupid they are. . .

on an unrelated note, leah garchik, society columnist extrodanaire reported this in her column today:

"Physicist, scholar of space and time and (apparently) peep show fan Stephen Hawking visited the clubs of Broadway, including Centerfolds, on Tuesday, before going to Enrico's. Hawking was to speak at the Paramount in Oakland on Thursday night."

that guy is my hero . . . he develops a theory of creation for the everyman to read, and goes to strip clubs. . . what a man!

polish is hard

i had my second polish lesson from my new tutor last night, and i have to say, simply, polish is hard. . .my brain still hurts. i am making progress (i think) but am still having trouble with the 'przch' combo - hmm.......

food food food

this was a good food weekend (even the pizza on friday night from orgasmica was good), a good friends weekend, and with the exception of another pitiful showing by the 49ers, a good sports weekend too.....

ewa and her friend jodi had a lackluster garage sale saturday morning/afternoon, and made a whopping $30 between the two of them. i declined to participate, as my time was better spent sitting on my butt watching tv and reading cookbooks. . . which is my codename for heaven.

we ate dinner at capaninna saturday night, which is this very good italian place on union and laguna. . . i've eaten there 4 or 5 times now, and each time it has been fantastic. . . we had 3 great appetizers - i had damn good primi, and then all our main dishes were excellent too....we ended with some small cream puffs dipped in caramel and a few glasses of the owners private stock of lemoncello (since they only have a beer and wine license, it was all very hush hush) . . . after that it was a few more cocktails at home and a bit of headache in the morning. . .

sunday morning was spent at the ferry building, which is really the best place to spend most mornings, and the afternoon was spent making beef bourgonionm, watching football, and reading the paper. . .as if that wasnt good enough, my sister and gary came over for dinner and there was a news simpsons! really, what else (besides having monday off) could have made it a better weekend?

90210

am in LA today to meet with the Yahoos down here, and stayed at the beverley hills hilton last night, which was pretty nice. traveled down here with scott and we shared a really crappy dinner at trader vics. . .my need to try the one in SF as a goof has been taken care of by some pretty crappy food and a $130 check . . . breakfast at the beverley hotel was pretty awful too. now getting ready to limp back to SF with battered stomach. . .but scott and i did manage to belt out the theme to '90210' and smash forearms just like the guys from TV. . .it was pretty sweet.
